Eduroam
eduroam stands for Education Roaming. Using 802.1x security standards over a RADIUS-based infrastructure, it aims to enable users of eduroam member institutions to access the network seamlessly at other educational institutions as well.
Users of eduroam member institutions can connect to the network at another eduroam member institution (Visited Institution) using the same username and password they use to connect to the network at their own institution (Home Institution). When a user at a visited institution sends a connection request to the eduroam network broadcast there, the visited institution's authentication server forwards the user to the authentication server of their home institution to determine whether they are authorized. Because all of these queries are carried out through an encrypted tunnel established between the servers, username and password pairs cannot be seen by anyone other than the user's own home server. All users need to do is configure the eduroam wireless network at the visited institution just as they would connect to their own institution's network.
eduroam has a federation hierarchy. There are currently two confederations in the world: the European eduroam confederation and the Asia-Pacific (APAN) eduroam confederation. eduroam member institutions send queries to the eduroam federations in their own countries, and national federations in turn send queries to the confederations they belong to. Thanks to this hierarchy, every new federation joining the European eduroam confederation, to which Türkiye belongs, and the APAN confederation, as well as every new institution joining them, can be recognized by all participants. To see the participants in the confederations, you can visit the eduroam website.
